Washington, D.C. – The following is a statement from Shannon Hodge, Founding Executive Director of the DC Charter School Alliance, regarding State Superintendent of Education Hanseul Kang’s decision to step down from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) next month:

“Members of DC’s charter school community have worked closely with State Superintendent Kang throughout her tenure.  She defined, reorganized, and managed the responsibilities of her office thoughtfully and skillfully, through inclusive processes and data-driven analysis that have proven effective.  She faithfully prepared for and led regular meetings with charter school leaders, created venues for joint planning of her own, and responded to unscheduled issues, concerns, and opportunities directly.

“State Superintendent Kang has equitably and professionally attended to the efficiency of OSSE’s dispersal of federal funds, approached grants eligibility and application processes, and improved systems that directly affect those who operate schools every day.  For these reasons, we commend her highly and offer every good wish as she undertakes new challenges as the inaugural assistant dean and executive director of the Broad Center at the Yale School of Management.”
