DC Charter School Alliance Statement on Mayor Bowser’s New Investments in Safe Passage Program

Dec 6, 2021

Washington, DC –– Following the Bowser Administration’s announcement that six community-based organizations will receive $4.3 million from the Office of Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes for Fiscal Year 2022 to support the District’s new Safe Passage Safe Blocks initiative, DC Charter School Alliance Founding Executive Director Shannon Hodge released the following statement:

“As DC is facing the highest murder rate in decades and gun violence continues to have devastating impacts on the lives of young people, we applaud Mayor Bowser’s investment in crime prevention and keeping students safe. These grants must be a starting point in developing a robust, cross-agency, multi-stakeholder strategy to de-escalate and resolve conflict, prevent violence, and ensure that our young people have educational and economic options. We cannot let violence claim another precious life.”
